A continuation course building on content from MORT 211 - Funeral Directing I . The student will continue to learn specific procedures used when making funeral arrangements for the bereaved family. Specific attention will be paid to the various religious, fraternal, military and secular funeral service options. In addition, students will explore: notification of death, transfer of remains, pre-funded/pre-planned funerals, religious practices, fraternal and military funerals, shipment of remains, aftercare and professionalism in funeral service.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain various American and global religious funeral customs.
  2. Describe military funeral procedures.
  3. Explain with client families pre-funded/pre-planned funerals.
  4. Discuss basic expectations for the shipping of human remains.
  5. Exhibit knowledge of the specific vocabulary associated with funeral service.
  6. Explain terminology and considerations unique to cremation arrangements.
  7. Identify current practices and procedures in funeral service.
  8. Identify trends in funeral service.
  9. Demonstrate proper use of the American flag in funeral service activities.
  10. Discuss the psychological and sociological aspects of funeral service.
  11. Describe fraternal service organizations and associated funeral/memorial services they offer.
