PHLB 257 - Phlebotomy Externship

Provides the opportunity to discuss and perform phlebotomy procedures under supervision with learning experiences obtained in selected laboratories, physician offices, clinics, or hospitals.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Perform 100 successful venipunctures.
  2. Perform 100 clinical hours in a phlebotomy setting.
  3. Abide by established safety precautions.
  4. Interact with patients and co-workers in a professional manner.
  5. Apply professional liability and health and safety requirements, to include universal precautions.
  6. Relate anatomy, physiology and appropriate medical terminology to phlebotomy procedures.
  7. Provide experience required for national certification.
Ivy Tech cannot guarantee that any student will pass a certification or licensing exam. The goal of providing a certification exam studies class is to assist you in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation for your studies as you prepare for the exam.

CERTIFICATION EXAM

All students enrolled in this course are required to take the corresponding certification exam at some point on or before the last day of the course. The application fee is paid as a consumable fee at the beginning of the course. Because the exam is a required activity, failure to take the exam will result in the student receiving a grade no higher than a C for the course.

  • Discuss clinical experiences.
  • Review and prepare for a phlebotomy exam for certification.
  • Mock certification exam.
