Examines theories, research, and assessment techniques related to the psychological analysis and description of human personality.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of major theories, research methods, and assessment instruments used in personality psychology.
- Apply the concepts of reliability, validity, standardization, and cross-cultural fairness in psychological assessment.
- Demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast different approaches to the study of personality, including the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, social/cultural, biological, and humanistic/existential approaches.
- Understand how perception, cognition, motivation, and emotion affect personality.
- Explain and analyze the role of the self in personality theory.
- Demonstrate an understanding of personality disorders and how they are described and organized in the DSM-5.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- The goals of personality psychology
- Basic sources of data in researching personality
- Research methods used to study personality
- The trait approach
- Major theorists and concepts each theorist used to conceptualize personality including the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, social/cultural, biological, and humanistic/existential approaches
- Key psychological processes involved in personality including perception, cognition, motivation, and emotion
- The self in personality, including cross-cultural comparisons of the self
- Personality disorders
