Considers sexuality from an historic, scientific, evolutionary and psychosocial perspective including sex research and methods, the biological bases of sexuality, sexual behavior, sexuality and the life cycle, sexual problems, and social issues.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Differentiate and describe the evolution of major psychological theories in the field of human sexuality.
- Describe and understand the different cultural perspectives and value systems on sexuality.
- Evaluate the various research methods and ethics in human sexuality and sex therapy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological and psychosocial processes of gender differentiation, gender identity and sexual orientation.
- Distinguish basic sexual anatomy and sexual functioning.
- Analyze the sources, processes, and behavioral expressions of human sexual development across the lifespan.
- Demonstrate knowledge regarding the range of sexual behaviors, outcomes and potential consequences.
