PTAS 102 - Diseases Trauma and Terminology

PREREQUISITES: APHY 101 - Anatomy and Physiology I , PTAS 101 - Introduction to the Physical Therapist Assistant , and PTAS 107 - Kinesiology
PROGRAM: Physical Therapist Assistant
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2
LAB HOURS MIN: 2
DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2018

Explores diseases and trauma which necessitate physical therapy for the client. Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, psychology, disabilities and physics related to these conditions are discussed along with instrumentation, implants and fixation devices. Provides students with the opportunity to explore their own reactions to illness and disability and to discuss how to recognize patients’ and families’ reactions to illness and disability.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Communication (7D7)
    • Define medical terminology of the major human body systems
    • Apply effective professional written and verbal communication skills
  2. Individual and Cultural Differences (7D8)
    • Identify major human body system pathophysiology specific to various cultures and populations and across the lifespan
    • Discuss and report feelings and attitudes toward illness, disability, death, and medical and physical therapy interventions
  3. Behavior and Conduct (7D1, 7D4)
    • Identify the role of the Physical Therapist Assistant under the supervision of the Physical Therapist in the intervention of major human body system pathophysiology
  4. Plan of Care - Understanding [toward goals and intended outcomes] (7D17)
    • Identify the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of major human body systems as related to medical information found in the Plan of Care
    • Identify common diagnostic and medical procedures and their relationship to the physical therapy Plan of Care (7D18)
    • Identify common medication therapeutic and adverse effects and their relationship to the physical therapy Plan of Care
    • Identify common physical therapy intervention strategies of major human body systems found in the physical therapy Plan of Care
  5. Plan of Care - Implementation [under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist] (7D23+)
    • Wound Management (7D23i)
      • Identify characteristics of infectious agents
      • Identify means of infection transmission
      • Identify strategies to reduce transmission of infectious agents
      • Describe common rehabilitative responses to exercise of major human body systems
    • Physical agents and mechanical agents (7D23c)
      • Compare and contrast types of vascular disorders
      • Identify physical agent indications and contraindications for vascular disorder rehabilitation
      • List pathologies and risk factors that may necessitate orthotic and prosthetic recommendations (7D23b)
    • Therapeutic exercise (7D23h)
      • Identify normal and abnormal responses to exercise of major human body systems
  6. Plan of Care - Competency in Data Collection [under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist] (7D24)
    • Aerobic capacity and endurance (7D24a)
      • Identify strategies to measure responses to endurance training: e.g. vital sign measure, response to exercise
    • Mental Functions (7D24c)
      • Identify strategies to measure arousal, awareness and cognition
    • Integumentary integrity (7D24f)
      • Describe characteristics of various types of wounds
      • Describe various wound measurement strategies and scales
    • Pain (7D24j)
      • Identify strategies to classify pain
    • Ventilation, Respiration, and Circulation (7D24n)
      • Identify data collection strategies for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders
      • Identify procedures for data collection for vital signs, pulse, circulation, ABI, and breathing patterns related to specific pathologies seen in physical therapy
  7. Scope of Practice - Plan of Care: adjusts, recognizes, reports, clarifies with supervising PT (7D19-21)
    • Compare and contrast patient responses that necessitate consultation with member of the interprofessional healthcare team considering the PTA scope of practice under the supervising Physical Therapist
  8. Plan of Care - education of patient, caregiver and non-healthcare others with supervising PT (7D12, 7D23g)
    • Dramatize patient education in simulated patient scenarios with emphasis on prevention and wellness activities
  9. Emergency response (7D26)
    • Identify emergency situations in the rehabilitation of the major human body systems
    • Identify the best course of action of the Physical Therapist Assistant in simulated patient emergency scenarios
  10. Healthcare literature (7D9, 7D10)
    • Give examples of appropriate resources for quality healthcare literature in the field of physical therapy
    • Demonstrate the knowledge to critically judge available research with regard to research characteristics related to patient values and the physical therapy plan of care
    • Summarize appropriate physical therapy related literature in written and/or oral presentation
