RDTH 240 - Pathology and Treatment Principles II

Content of this course is a continuation of Pathology and Treatment Principles I. This Course will provide the student with the fundamentals of several more disease processes. Malignant conditions, etiology and epidemiology, patient workup and methods of treatment are discussed. Attention is given to patient prognosis, treatment results and the effects of combined therapies. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate treatment setup procedures in the simulation lab.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe relevant anatomy and lymphatics for each structure.
  2. Identify the epidemiology and possible etiology for each cancer.
  3. Describe the most common pathologies for each structure.
  4. Explain the most common clinical features (symptoms) associated with each disease process.
  5. List the possible workup/staging techniques associated with each structure.
  6. Identify the treatment of choice and explain the combined modality approach.
  7. Describe in detail the radiotherapy treatment, rationale, and techniques used for each treatment process.
  8. List common side effects (late and acute) associated with the treatment of each structure.
