This course is designed to integrate the various professional courses into a single perspective as it relates to radiation oncology. Professional concerns will be addressed and attention will be given to issues related to the workplace, continued professional development, and the need for lifelong learning. Extensive review of programmatic material will be the focus of this course. Extensive review of physics, protection and radiation therapy procedures is covered.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of a radiation therapist.
- Discuss the benefits of continuing education and professional and personal enhancement.
- Explain, in detail, all components and categories of the radiation therapy certification exam.
- Explain radiation safety procedures for radiation therapy.
- Describe new/emerging technologies in radiation oncology.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Patient care and education
- Clinical concepts in radiation oncology
- Treatment planning
- Treatment delivery
- Radiation protection and quality assurance
- GENERAL EDUCATION OUTCOMES MEASURE
- All associate degree graduates must complete the Ivy Tech General Education assessment in their capstone course. This is a capstone course requirement. The instructor will advise when and how the assessment will be administered. Performance on the assessment will be part of the course grade. Please consult your instructor with questions.
