SPAN 101 - Spanish Level I


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing .

An introductory course in Spanish. Focuses on developing students’ capacity to use the language and to appreciate Spanish-speaking cultures. Emphasis is placed on skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar acquisition.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar.
  2. Understand simple oral communication about familiar topics, such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, the weather and the calendar, descriptions of people, clothing, and leisure activities.
  3. Speak in simple sentences about specific topics with enough accuracy to be understood by a native speaker of the language.
  4. Ask and answer questions on everyday topics in the present tense.
  5. Write simple standard expressions, complete sentences and short paragraphs.
  6. Read and discuss simple paragraphs and articles which may include cultural and literary works.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
  8. Demonstrate understanding of the geography of the Spanish-speaking world.
