An introductory course in Spanish. Focuses on developing students’ capacity to use the language and to appreciate Spanish-speaking cultures. Emphasis is placed on skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar acquisition.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar.
- Understand simple oral communication about familiar topics, such as greetings, the alphabet, numbers, the weather and the calendar, descriptions of people, clothing, and leisure activities.
- Speak in simple sentences about specific topics with enough accuracy to be understood by a native speaker of the language.
- Ask and answer questions on everyday topics in the present tense.
- Write simple standard expressions, complete sentences and short paragraphs.
- Read and discuss simple paragraphs and articles which may include cultural and literary works.
- Demonstrate understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
- Demonstrate understanding of the geography of the Spanish-speaking world.
