SPAN 202 - Spanish Level IV


PREREQUISITES: SPAN 201 - Spanish Level III  or demonstrated competency in Spanish through appropriate assessment; demonstrated competency in reading and writing through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing .

Spanish is the primary medium of instruction. The goal of the course is to continue the development and reinforcement of the skills of the target language: listening, speaking, reading and writing at an advanced intermediate level. The course continues the study of grammar/syntax and vocabulary building and continues the study of Spanish and Latin American civilizations through readings, both journalistic and literary, and reinforced through class discussions as well as written and oral reports.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Speak Spanish with fluency and accurate pronunciation comprehensible to a native speaker to discuss past, present and future events at an advanced intermediate level.
  2. Read expanded literary selections about the history, culture, literature, and current events of the Spanish-speaking world and answer questions and express opinions about the reading in Spanish.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to research the cultures, history and literature of the Spanish- speaking world.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to compose a coherent text of several paragraphs with enough accuracy in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary to be understood by a native speaker of Spanish.
  5. Demonstrate a broadened cultural understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.
