VISC 225 - Fundamentals of Print Production

Provides a history and overview of the interrelationship of various printing processes. Course offers instructions in basic production operations. Covers materials and techniques utilizing equipment and tools necessary to operate some type of printing process (offset, flexography, screen printing, letterpress, etc.).
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Develop a design appropriate for production method and demonstrate the ability to take it from design through final production.
- Utilize the production process: complete at least one design from design creation to final production. This process should include a comprehensive approach and should include developing the design (digital preferred), creating separations, prepress, printing plates, hands- on with a printing process, trimming, binding, folding, packaging for distribution, etc. Students may need to collaborate based on the equipment available. The intent is that EVERY student be hands-on with the equipment to ensure competency.
- Producing a given design in quantity (25 to 1000s) with adherence to consistent duplication.
- Demonstrate knowledge of various printing processes.
- Describe the principles of printing process setup and operation.
- Describe the best printing process for specific print jobs.
- Identify basic functions of the inking system.
- Describe basic methods of image transfer.
- Apply the basics of the printing process (i.e. press or equipment) maintenance.
- Maintain daily checklists to insure safety of operation.
- Describe paper manufacturing and interpret its behavior on press.
- Identify ink formulation and manufacture.

- Demonstrate knowledge of basic CMYK combinations.
- Apply basic color theory to the printing process.
- Demonstrate ability to create appropriate screens/plates for color printing.
- Exhibit the ability to plan a color job on the press.
