NRSG 105 - Medical-Surgical Nursing I Clinical


PREREQUISITES: Admission to Program, NRSG 100 - Fundamentals of Nursing

Provides the opportunity to apply nursing skills in diverse patient care situations. Emphasizes assessment skills in determining patient health status. Applies knowledge of etiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, and assessment findings to identify patient needs.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for providing culturally sensitive and individualized patient-centered care based on patient values, clinical skills, and evidence-based practice. (SLO 1, 6)
  2. Demonstrate beginning use of technology, including electronic health records, terminology, and standardized practices to support safe, effective, and quality patient care. (SLO 3, 4)
  3. Function at the basic level within inter/intraprofessional teams to achieve quality patient care to diverse populations in a variety of health care settings. (SLO 1, 5)
  4. Safely demonstrate progressively complex nursing skills utilized in meeting needs of patients. (SLO 1)
  5. Perform beginning assessments appropriate to the individual patient’s clinical status in a timely, organized and efficient manner. (SLO 1)
  6. Apply knowledge of etiology, pathophysiology, and evidence-based practice in relation to common alterations in health to the clinical findings of the individually assigned patient. (SLO 2, 4)
  7. Apply knowledge of diagnostic tests to clinical findings of assigned patients. (SLO 2)
  8. Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques to interact with patients, their significant others, and members of inter/intraprofessional healthcare team in meeting individualized patient health care goals. (SLO 5)
  9. Demonstrate proficiency in drug dosage calculations and medication administration to promote a safe patient environment. (SLO 1, 7)
