NRSG 208 - Practice Issues for Associate Degree Nursing


PREREQUISITES: NRSG 200 - Complex Medical-Surgical Nursing for the ASN  and NRSG 201 - Complex Medical Surgical Nursing for the ASN Clinical ; or NRSG 206 - Nursing Care of Childbearing and Childrearing Families  and NRSG 207 - Nursing Care of Childbearing and Childrearing Families Clinical ; all required general education courses must be completed including MATH 123 , MATH 135 , MATH 136 , MATH 137 , MATH 200  or higher

Explores strategies utilized to promote lifelong personal and professional development. Analyzes the roles of the registered nurse within the context of the larger healthcare environment. Examines internal and external influences on nursing practice, including evidence-based practice standards. Explores basic concepts of nursing leadership and management. Analyzes legal and ethical issues in healthcare. This is a capstone course for the nursing program for the associate degree.

METHODS OF DELIVERY: Classroom discussion, lecture, reading assignments, group projects and discussion, independent study, and online assignment or discussion.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Appraise the role of the associate degree nurse, incorporating professional, legal and ethical guidelines, in providing collaborative, safe, culturally competent, and holistic patient-centered care (SLO 1).
  2. Explore the relationships of the biological, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual components of patient needs in an effort to improve quality and safety of patient care (SLO 2).
  3. Examine the use of technology as a means of navigating the electronic health record, communicating with inter/intraprofessional teams, and being involved with decision making in the delivery of quality and safe patient care (SLO 3).
  4. Discuss current evidence-based practices and critical thinking techniques used in health care delivery systems (SLO 4).
  5. Examine communication practices that foster effective collaboration with patients, families and the inter/intraprofessional team for planning and delivery of quality patient care (SLO 5).
  6. Explore accountability and responsibility issues in fulfilling the role of the associate degree nurse, in light of personal and professional growth through lifelong learning (SLO 7).
  7. Discuss the provision of leadership and management in relation to internal and external influences of politics, economics, health care delivery trends, and role stressors on nursing practice (SLO 8).
  8. Prepare for the transition to the workforce through developing strategies for NCLEX-RN exam preparation, licensure, job-seeking activities, and involvement in professional organizations (SLO 7).
