OPTI 232 - Contact Lens and Ocular Refractive Corrections

Course content is designed to provide the student with the understanding of basic contact lens concepts and technical skills to assist in the care of the contact lens patient.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Define the role of the optometric technician in a contact lens practice.
  2. Discuss contact lens terminology and history.
  3. Identify anatomical structures related to contact lens wear.
  4. Obtain a general history to determine visual, physiological, pathological, and activity needs of the patient.
  5. List different types of contact lens material.
  6. Describe and perform the pre-fitting examination.
  7. Describe basic fitting procedures.
  8. Interpret refractive error and keratometry readings.
  9. Discuss lens wear options.
  10. Assist in the contact lens fitting examination.
  11. Instruct patients in contact lens hygiene, insertion, removal, and care.
  12. Demonstrate insertion and removal of soft contact lenses.
  13. Describe complications of contact lens wear.
  14. List proper lens care systems.
  15. Discuss gas permeable contact lens terminology, history, and design.
  16. Discuss gas permeable contact lens optics.
  17. Demonstrate insertion and removal of gas permeable lenses.
  18. Instruct patients in gas permeable contact lens hygiene, insertion, removal, and care.
  19. Determine the need for contact lens modification and perform modifications.
  20. Order and verify contact lenses.
  21. Maintain contact lens inventory.
  22. Define and discuss different types of refractive therapies.
  23. Describe presbyopic contact lens and intraocular lens options.
  24. Discuss specialty contact lens fittings.
  25. Discuss legal aspects related to the contact lens practice.
  26. Demonstrate understanding of contact lens theory.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Soft contact lens fitting exam and follow-up procedures.
  • Legal aspects and FDA involvement in contact lenses.
  • Contact lens types and the materials used
  • Contact lens solutions, their ingredients, and their interactions.
  • Specialty contact lenses, including RGPS and to treat conditions such as keratoconus.
