OPTI 251 - Ophthalmic Procedures II


PREREQUISITES: OPTI 151 - Ophthalmic Procedures

Course content is a continuation of OPTI 151 - Ophthalmic Procedures   furthering the knowledge and techniques used in an ophthalmic practice. The course will emphasize advanced procedures important in the field of refraction, tonometry, visual field testing, and slit lamp evaluation.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Independently carry out an efficient and accurate preliminary optical examination.
  2. Discuss results of the preliminary examination leading to a more specialized exam.
  3. Take an accurate blood pressure reading and record the results.
  4. Discuss how blood pressure can affect the eye.
  5. Discuss and perform tonometry using different testing procedures.
  6. Discuss glaucoma and how intraocular pressure can affect the eye.
  7. Demonstrate procedures of automated perimeters including the “Humphrey Field Analyzer” in visual field testing.
  8. Identify visual field defects.
  9. Analyze fundus photography.
  10. Correctly employ the use of the autorefractor.
  11. Skillfully and accurately collect data from pachymetry.
  12. Demonstrate the use of a slit lamp during an eye examination.
  13. Correctly identify different results from slit lamp examinations.
  14. Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic equipment.
  15. Explain gonioscopy.
  16. Discuss the different eye drops used for dilation, anesthetic, and staining.
  17. Demonstrate correct techniques for eye drop installation and irrigation.
  18. Experience a video on intraocular lens implantation.
  19. Administer and record specified topical and oral medications at the direction of the optometrist.
  20. Identify ocular emergencies and take appropriate action.
  21. Prepare the examination and treatment area.
  22. Identify medical terms of common ocular and systemic conditions/diseases.
  23. Implement emergency procedures and administer first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  24. Implement infection control protocols.
  25. Demonstrate understanding and employ scope of practice and state and national opticianry regulations.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Extended preliminary testing, including blood pressure and tonometry.
  • Explanation of equipment for visual fields, fundus photography, and autorefraction.
  • Ocular pharmacology.
  • Ocular surgery types.
