This course is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of the elements key to successful communication across cultures by survey of major concepts in cross-cultural and intercultural interaction. Examines the effects of customs, behaviors, and values on the interpersonal communication process.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify, describe, and explain the cultural context and its impact on communication.
  2. Understand and apply factors that shape the communication process in different cultures.
  3. Understand and apply relevant principles, theories, and research findings associated with intercultural communication to individuals’ lives and professional contexts.
  4. Develop cultural intelligence and intercultural communication competencies needed by individuals to be effective members of the global community.
  5. Compare and contrast communication styles between cultures such as African American, Latino, Indian, Middle Eastern, Native Americans, and Asians.
  6. Explain how cultural differences affect business and the workplace.
  7. Identify and explain the five dimensions of intercultural communication.
  8. Identify primary differences in communication practices of different cultures.
  9. Identify the benefits and challenges of intercultural relationships.
  10. Analyze the constraints on communication and relationships among people of different cultures.
