COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the usage of nanotechnology for bioapplications. Students learn about the use of nanoparticles in biology and using nano-metrology techniques, like scanning electron microscopy and liquid atomic force microscopy, for bio-characterization. Focus is also given on functionalization, nano drug delivery systems, disease detection, and microfluidics. The potential health concerns of nanotechnology are also explored.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Determine the uses and applications of nanotechnology in biology.
- Perform imaging of biostructures by SEM and liquid AFM.
- Design and fabricate microfluidic channels.
- Characterize the uses of functionalization for bionanotechnology.
- Explore the potential health concerns of using nanotechnology.
