Allows the Practical Nursing student the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to provide ethical, culturally competent, and holistic care for children, childbearing and childrearing families. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of illness and the maintenance, promotion, and restoration of health as well as the support of death with dignity and implementation of the ordered plan of treatment. Knowledge of principles of growth and development are utilized to adapt therapeutic communication, therapeutic intervention, and reinforce teaching-learning techniques to provide nursing care to children, childbearing, and childrearing families. The nursing process provides the framework for problem solving and critical thinking in providing nursing care.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for providing patient-centered care to children, childbearing and childrearing families. (SLO 1)
- Demonstrate effective use of technology and standardized, evidence-based practices to provide safe and quality patient care to children, childbearing, and childrearing families. (SLO 3)
- Function effectively within the scope of practice of a practical nurse within inter/intraprofessional teams to achieve quality patient care. (SLO 1, 5).
- Provide individualized patient care to children, childbearing and childrearing families based on patient values, clinical skills, and current evidence-based practice. (SLO 1, 4).
- Utilize the nursing process to provide ethical, culturally competent and holistic care for children, childbearing and childrearing families. (SLO 1, 2).
- Utilize safe, evidence-based practices when providing nursing care for children, childbearing and childrearing families. (SLO 1, 6).
- Apply principles of individualized teaching-learning to patient care by reinforcing information to patients and families regarding promotion, maintenance, behaviors that promote wellbeing. (SLO 5, 6).
- Demonstrate effective, age appropriate therapeutic communication techniques when interacting with patients, families, and children. (SLO 5)
- Demonstrate proficiency in dosage calculations and medication administration while promoting a safe patient environment. (SLO 1, 2, 3, 7)
- Contributes to the development and implementation of safe, effective nursing care plans for children, childbearing and childrearing families, in collaboration with members of the inter/intraprofessional healthcare team using critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and the nursing process. (SLO 1, 2, 4, 5)
