Introduction to basic procedures used in dental hygiene practice, with primary emphasis on the techniques of instrumentation used in performing diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Identify intra and extra oral structures.
- Demonstrate proper use of dental equipment.
- Apply principles of patient/operator positioning.
- Apply principles of proper instrumentation to include selection, grasp, fulcrum, adaptation, and activation.
- Maintain operatory, patient and operator asepsis before, during, and after treatment.
- Perform oral hygiene instruction to all patients so they may control dental disease.
- Apply preventive and therapeutic agents to the surfaces or oral tissues.
- Treat patients, interact with students and instructors, and maintain equipment and operatory in a professional manner.
- Apply principles learned in previous and concurrent course work to patient care.
