HLHS 106 - Healthcare Specialist Certifications


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

Provides students with information necessary to recognize and safely perform one and two-person cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as it relates to adults, children and infants including use of the AED. Successful demonstration of principles and techniques related to resuscitation, bloodborne pathogens, and First Aid will result in the granting of appropriate certifications.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Recognize cardiac and/or respiratory arrest and take appropriate action.
  2. Establish an airway and initiate ventilation.
  3. Perform one and two-person adult, child and infant CPR using universal precautions.
  4. Demonstrate the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  5. Demonstrate the principles of aseptic technique and bloodborne pathogens.
  6. List safety procedures based upon CLIA and OSHA regulations.
  7. Access information for emergency treatment from the MSDS manual.
  8. Explain HIPAA concepts, privacy rules and their impact on the workplace.
  9. Identify First Aid required in different emergency situations.
