HLHS 118 - Diversity in Health Care


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

Explores diversity and its relationship to the provision of effective health care. Exposes the students to a variety of theories, viewpoints, and communication patterns within and across various cultures, ethnic groups, religions, and sexual identifications.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Explore theories of cultural diversity.
  2. Recognize common cultural diversity terminology.
  3. Identify awareness of individual cultural values and sensitivity to those of other cultural backgrounds.
  4. Analyze the impact of diverse communication patterns on the provision of effective healthcare.
  5. Describe the variations in views of health and healthcare practices among major ethnic and religious groups.
  6. Identify considerations that healthcare providers may need to modify the delivery of care to culturally diverse populations.
