HLHS 125 - Behavioral Health


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

Within the context and application in the healthcare setting, this course will examine theories and research related to behavioral health and abnormal behavior with primary emphasis on symptoms, communication strategies, and interaction with individuals. It will explore fundamental concepts of diversity, disability awareness, addiction, and wellness as they apply to quality of life across the adult lifespan.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify theories and demonstrate fundamental knowledge of biological, sociological, cultural, psychological and spiritual development across the adult lifespan.
  2. Define and discuss the impact of culture, diversity and social justice as they pertain to perception and treatment of behavioral health concerns and aging.
  3. Examine lifestyle behaviors associated with the development of chronic behavioral health illnesses.
  4. Discuss and identify treatment options, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions of psychological and behavioral disorders for the following:
    1. Anxiety
    2. Stress Disorders
    3. Disorders of Mood
    4. Eating Disorders
    5. Substance Use and Addictive Disorders
    6. Disorders of Aging and Cognition
    7. Exhibiting expression or indications of distress (i.e. anxiety, striking out, self-isolating, etc)
  5. Identify types and classes of drugs related to the treatment of selected behaviors and abnormal behaviors, including potential complications from drug interactions.
  6. Discuss and define parameters of therapeutic touch and communication.
  7. Demonstrate general and specific verbal interventions used to support patient treatment and recovery.
  8. Demonstrate understanding of caregiver behaviors which support low conflict interactions with patients.
  9. Identify strategies for behavioral health promotion and interprofessional collaborative practice when interacting with patients with behavioral health issues.
  10. Describe and discuss the dying process, the definition of death, and the stages of grief as they apply to caregivers.
