HUMA 118 - Music Appreciation PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing PROGRAM: Humanities CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Spring, 2020
Introduces the student to music with an emphasis on critical listening. Surveys a variety of genres, composers and their compositions. Students will evaluate music as an art form, an entertainment medium and as a vehicle for self-expression. The reciprocal relationship of music on and by culture will be investigated. It is strongly recommended that students attend a musical event to gain firsthand experience in music. No previous background in music required.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate an increased proficiency in music vocabulary.
- Explore how music has been influenced by historical events and circumstances.
- Recognize certain genres by listening to musical examples and identifying their origins.
- Distinguish between diverse musical cultures and a variety of composers’ styles.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of various musical styles including those previously unfamiliar to the student.
- Examine how music is representative of and shapes cultures.
