HUMS 106 - Physiology of Aging


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

Focuses on the physical changes and common pathologies associated with the aging process. Includes the psychological and social implications of changes for human behavior. Focuses on health promotion and disease prevention.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Compare Peck’s tasks of middle and older age to Erikson’s stages of development.
  2. Examine Brammer and Shostroni’s development tasks.
  3. Identify various biological theories used to explain the aging process (somatic mutation and error theories, wear and tear theory, accumulation theory, cross-linking theory, free radical theory, immunological theory).
  4. Assess the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and receptors and effectors and their relationship to age-related changes and disorders of the nervous system.
  5. Discuss the components, functions, and age-related changes and disorders of the sensory system.
  6. Discuss the functions, components, and age-related changes and disorders of the urinary system.
  7. Relate the importance of exercise, its effects, and how to develop appropriate programs for older adults.
  8. Discuss dementia, delirium, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  9. Compare and contrast dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  10. Illustrate the physiological effects of death and dying on the older person.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Age-related factors that diminish the individual’s ability to function physically, emotionally, and psychologically
  • Degenerative influences of aging on various organ systems
  • Theories of aging
  • Age-related disorders
