HUMS 109 - Understanding Diversity


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  and ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing .

Introductory course that encourages cultural awareness and appreciation of diversity. Focuses on cultural variations in attitudes, values, language, gestures, and customs. Includes information about major racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Define and discuss the meaning of culture and cultural diversity.
  2. Examine the impact of cultural stereotypes and prejudice.
  3. Identify cultural variations in verbal and nonverbal communications.
  4. Analyze similarities and differences among the major world religions.
  5. Evaluate the cultural impact of socioeconomic class.
  6. Examine the cultural influence on time and space orientation.
  7. Demonstrate culturally sensitive interpersonal skills.
  8. Explain the history, contributions, and social customs of the major ethnic groups in the United States.
