HUMS 120 - Health and Aging


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  and ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing .

Presents an overview of the physical changes and common pathologies associated with the aging process. Focuses on the psychological and social implication of such changes for human behavior. Throughout the course there is a focus on health promotion and disease prevention during the later years.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe current general information about aging, developmental perspectives, homeostasis, and theories of aging.
  2. Identify and describe each major organ system of the body in terms of normal functions, specific age-related changes in the system and common disorders or diseases associated with aging.
  3. Define and describe specific topics such as exercise, nutrition, medications, etc., and their interactions with older adults.
