HUMS 155 - Family and Community in Youth Work


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  and ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing .

Examines stages of the family life cycle and interpersonal relationships among family members within a context of cultural awareness and appreciation of diversity. Recognizes impact of cultural variations in attitudes, values, language, gestures, and customs upon the family’s ability to function. Includes information about major racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Explores basic principles of working with groups and communities.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss the role of community in empowering children and youth.
  2. Identify diverse family systems in the multicultural setting.
  3. Identify and analyze the stages of the family life cycle.
  4. Identify and analyze the child in the family from the family systems approach.
  5. Identify the ecological systems affecting the family.
  6. Discuss, demonstrate and analyze principles and techniques of culturally sensitive interpersonal skills for working with families.
  7. Identify community and professional resources needed to support youth and their families.
  8. Analyze specific family challenges in various types of families and cultural/religious settings.
  9. Identify and assess family support systems within the community.
  10. Identify, describe and discuss stressors and potential stressors that may affect children, youth and families.
  11. Describe and reflect on the family strengths model.
  12. Define and discuss the meaning of culture and cultural diversity.
  13. Examine the impact of cultural stereotypes and prejudice.
  14. Analyze the cultural impact of socioeconomic class and the cultural influence on time and space orientation.
