HUMS 202 - Internship II


PREREQUISITES: HUMS 101 - Introduction to Human Services , HUMS 102 - Helping Relationship Techniques , HUMS 103 - Interviewing and Assessment , HUMS 206 - Group Process and Skills  and either HUMS 200 - Substance Abuse Internship  or HUMS 201 - Internship I  and Program Chair Approval.

The second of two fieldwork experiences in approved human service agencies. The student will complete 160 hours under the supervision of an agency professional and a college faculty member. The classroom component will include small group discussion and analysis of the internship experience.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain the operational and organizational structure of the agency.
  2. Demonstrate professionalism by reporting for work on time, keeping appointments, and following the rules and regulations of the agency.
  3. Create purposeful helping relationships, assess problems, and develop appropriate courses of action at an advanced level.
  4. Demonstrate awareness of appropriate boundaries and ethical standards of conduct.
  5. Provide accurate documentation as appropriate.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Developing a learning plan
  • Application of the integrative processing model
  • Developing a case study

The student’s success will be determined by several factors beyond the instruction in the course including the student’s test-taking skills, willingness to study outside of class, and satisfactory completion of appropriate practice examinations. Certification and licensure examination questions are drawn from databases of hundreds of possible questions; therefore, a thorough understanding of the subject matter is required. The goal of Ivy Tech in providing a certification examination studies class is to assist the student in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation as the student prepares for the appropriate examination.
