Course provides opportunities to observe, perform, and discuss various administrative and clinical competencies under supervision, with learning experiences obtained in selected physician’s offices, clinics or ambulatory care facilities.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Summarize and share office activities in the following ways.
    1. Weekly diaries with logged hours evaluated on:
      • Completeness
      • Depth of observations
      • Participation and contributions
      • Neatness
    2. Discuss routine office experience and unusual occurrences in the office.
    3. Review administrative and clinical procedural manuals from class and compare to office practice.
  2. Explore new knowledge.
    1. Share new methods and/or techniques in offices.
    2. Share new ideas from patient brochures, professional readings, and journals.
  3. Prepare for graduation, prepare for CMA Exam, prepare for AAMA membership, and prepare for employment - resumes and interviews.
  4. Complete skills checklist and office evaluation forms.

CERTIFICATION EXAM: All students enrolled in this course are required to take the CMA (AAMA) certification exam no sooner than 30 days prior to, and no later than the end, of the course. The application fee is paid as a consumable fee at the beginning of the course. Because this exam is a required activity, failure to take the exam will result in the student not passing the course.

Ivy Tech cannot guarantee that any student will pass a certification or licensing exam. The goal of providing a certification exam studies class is to assist you in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation for your studies as you prepare for the exam.
