POLS 112 - State and Local Government


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing .

This course covers the basic organization and operation of state and local governments. Topics include federalism, state constitutions, courts, governors, legislatures, elections, campaign finance, interest groups, local governments, budgets and taxes, education and law enforcement.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain the division of power between the states and the national government.
  2. Identify ways the national government influences state policy making.
  3. Identify the policymaking responsibilities of state and local governments.
  4. Describe the operations of the state governmental institutions.
  5. Identify and analyze the challenges facing state and local governments.
