Introduces students to the historical experiences, values, cultures, and beliefs of the major racial and ethnic groups that make up the population of the United States. Examines central questions in the theoretical and empirical study of race and ethnicity. This course will help prepare students to understand, appreciate, and work effectively with people who are different from themselves.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Describe sociological views on race and ethnicity.
- Explore the social, religious, and personal perspectives of a diverse society.
- Identify the origins of ethnic stratification, minority responses to subordination, and the relationship between class and ethnicity.
- Identify and differentiate competing theories of the origins of prejudice and discrimination.
- Analyze contemporary issues and those cultural facets that lead us to conformity and conflict.
- Describe the unique American experiences of specific groups - African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Indigenous Peoples (Native Americans), European Americans, and Arab Americans.
- Demonstrate awareness of the histories, realities, worldviews, and experiences of the cultures and the people of the world and its effect on the immigration patterns and the American experience.
