SOCI 252 - Social Problems


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

Explores various problems in contemporary American society. Examines structural and cultural aspects of social problems with specific reference to their origin, development, and suggested solutions. Course utilizes a sociological framework which encompasses a variety of theoretical perspectives.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop and apply the sociological perspective to social problems in American society.
  2. Develop the ability to read critically and think analytically about society and social problems.
  3. Develop the ability to identify, define, and investigate social problems and propose ways of dealing with them.
  4. Analyze typical stages of a social problem in a diverse, multicultural society, and examine how issues (e.g. socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, etc.) contribute to social problem formation.
  5. Apply sociological theory to social problems. Identify the background factors leading to the emergence of social problems in their historical context.
  6. Study statistics on specific social problems: crime and justice, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty, aging, families, work, education.
  7. Analyze the larger social structure and how it contributes to the creation of social problems and that solving a social problem may, at times, require change in our social structure.
