SOCI 261 - Sociology of Relationships and the Family


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

This course is designed to examine the sociological and psychological dynamics of dating, relationships, marriage, family life and parenting. Introduces students to the major theoretical paradigms as they relate to relationships. Emphasis will be placed on how our contemporary society and culture is affecting these institutions and customs. The course will also explore the impact of divorce and stepfamilies on today’s lifestyles.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify, describe, and utilize sociological concepts and theories about family structures and processes.
  2. Evaluate the sociological and psychological dynamics of dating, relationships, marriage, family life and parenting.
  3. Identify and describe the varieties of family types that exist in American society.
  4. Examine and develop an understanding of current family changes and stresses.
  5. Assess possible future changes, marriage forms, and living arrangements as they affect the American family.
