SPAN 102 - Spanish Level II


PREREQUISITES: SPAN 101 - Spanish Level I   Spanish Level I or demonstrated competency in Spanish through appropriate assessment; demonstrated competency in reading and writing through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing .

Continues the study of Spanish for students who have had the equivalent of one semester of college-level Spanish. Introduces additional grammatical structures and vocabulary to further develop speaking, reading, writing and listening skills as well as an appreciation of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar.
  2. Speak in Spanish about a variety of everyday topics, such as the holidays and the family, the home and household chores, the activities of a daily routine, college and academic subjects, professions and the workplace, and ordering food and drink in a restaurant.
  3. Speak about familiar topics using the present and the past tenses in both formal and informal situations with enough accuracy to be understood by a native speaker.
  4. Paraphrase material in Spanish.
  5. Describe and express ideas in writing with coherence.
  6. Read and discuss Spanish articles and texts with understanding.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the Spanish language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
