Provides an understanding of the needs of adults experiencing increasingly complex alterations in health within the context of select medical surgical concepts. Examines the roles of the licensed practical nurse and registered nurse in applying the nursing process and implementing the ordered plan of treatment.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Integrate Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies as they relate to collaborative, safe, culturally competent, and holistic patient-centered care. (SLO 1 )
  2. Describe the etiology pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of increasingly complex alterations in health to care of adults. (SLO 2)
  3. Compare and contrast the roles of the licensed practical nurse and registered nurse in relation to coordination and continuity of care as they collaborate with other members of the inter/intraprofessional team. (SLO 1, 5, 7, 8)
  4. Describe the current techniques and strategies for assessing and providing evidence-based nursing care to adults with increasingly complex alterations in health within the context of identified concepts. (SLO 4)
  5. Apply principles of the nursing process and integration of electronic health records data to the care of adults experiencing increasingly complex alterations in health within the context of identified concepts. (SLO 4)
  6. Examine the ordered plan of treatment of adults experiencing increasingly complex alterations in health. (SLO 2, 4)
  7. Prioritize the health teaching needs of adults and their significant others while providing for a safe care environment. (SLO 1, 2, 5)


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -  

  • Managing Care/QSEN
  • Philosophical concepts related to individuals, environment, nursing, health, and the nursing education process
  • Nursing process for adults experiencing increasingly complex alterations in health (within the context of cellular regulation, perfusion, acid base balance, neurological function, metabolism, reproduction, sensory perception and oxygenation).
  • Etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and diagnostic testing.
  • Identification and prioritization of patient care needs and utilization of the nursing process
  • Nursing care and ordered plan of treatment
  • Dosage Calculations
  • Electronic health records
