VISC 105 - Video and Sound


PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in  ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing  and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

An introduction to the field of video technology. Students will learn the basics of planning, shooting, editing and post-producing video and sound. Projects include exercises in technical and creative skills application, equipment usage and production techniques.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. List and compare various formats for video recording, storage and sequencing.
  2. Describe the production process, and define the responsibilities of production team members.
  3. Learn the basics of planning, shooting, editing and post-producing video.
  4. Analyze videos for technical quality and aesthetic principles.
  5. Demonstrate competent usage and handling of video equipment.
  6. Incorporate effective visual aesthetics in capturing video content.
  7. Compile and edit video content into creative and technically successful projects.


COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
  • Creative skills–, scripts and storyboards, and direction.
  • Technical skills– cameras, lighting, sound, editing software, coordinating a video shoot, studio and remote location techniques. Post-production activities –voice-over narration, distribution and social media platforms.
