This basic course emphasizes the study of American criminal justice problems and systems in historical and cultural perspectives, as well as discussing social and public policy factors affecting crime. Multidisciplinary and multicultural perspectives are emphasized.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Develop fundamental definitions and concepts of race, ethnic, discrimination, and minorities.
- Analyze racial, cultural, and ethnic factors and perspectives in the demographics of victims, offenders, and statistical data related to crimes.
- Interpret available empirical data related to crime and the criminal to determine the effect of bias or prejudice in the American system of justice and death penalty statutes.
- Evaluate the American social structure on the basis of discrimination and social and economic inequality.
- Analyze the relationship between law enforcement agencies and racial and/or ethnic minorities.
- Analyze the relationship between the judicial system and racial and/or ethnic minorities in the pre-trial procedures, trial, and sentencing.
- Evaluate the racial and ethnic composition of the offender population in the federal and state correctional systems.
- Discuss the need for and/or the possibility for change in the criminal justice system for minorities at the local, state, and federal level.
