HSPS 202 - Risk Management


PREREQUISITES: HSPS 102 - Introduction to Public Safety  and Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College  or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing

Provides students with an introduction to industrial safety, OSHA, various OSHA standards, workplace inspections, citations and penalties. Employee and employer responsibilities, right-to-know laws and safety awareness programs are examined. Safety motivation and knowledge, creating a healthy work environment and health hazards and issues are also studied. Areas such as the role of the supervisor, employee assistance programs, management of stress helps students understand the role employer’s play in creating a healthy workforce. In addition, the contributions of safety committees and other governmental agencies responsible for safety are examined.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Summarize the general provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
  2. Describe what employers and employees can do to create a safe work environment.
  3. Cite various safety standards that control and eliminate health and safety hazards.
  4. Describe the organizational services and programs for building a safer workplace.
  5. Recognize procedures used by OSHA to conduct workplace inspections, to issue citations, and to impose penalties on employers.
  6. Understand the role employers must assume to control alcohol and illegal drug use.
  7. List various techniques for improving stress, burnout and workplace violence.
